I’ve been busy preparing for an amazing show in two weeks. You know magic is mysterious and fun? What better way to show your loved one that you love them than bringing them to a magic show? There is an early show for the children, and a potluck for all. How do you know I love you? I’m personally inviting you to this.

I was on a retreat this past weekend and the fact that I’m a magician came up. I performed a few effects and a few people said “that was pretty cool”, and “neat” but it was monotone. As a performer it’s hard to gauge something like that. Not everything requires applause, but it can start a conversation.

On the second day of the retreat I did a few effects and one person went crazy (in a good way). Another was laughing hysterically. While their reactions were a bit more over the top than the others, they seemed more sincere.

A comedian I respect named Pete Holmes about magicians, audiences, and reactions.

For the first time in awhile I got stage fright. I was scheduled to do a quick set at a local comedy club last night, and my nerves got the best of me. When I perform at festivals and private parties those are people that want to see magic. Stand up comedy is a whole different world.

Between trying to write jokes that tied into the magic, make the magic funny and entertaining, and doing all of that in 7 minutes is tough. So I called a buddy of mine and asked him to fill in. I’ll be performing at other venues, just not the comedy clubs for awhile.

Here is what I am trying to avoid. A rant in this video is an example of comedy club magicians as told by one of my idols, Patton Oswalt.

I hope you had an amazing New Years eve, and hope you were safe and sane. I stayed in, drank some coffee and watched “The Office” marathon. I know, it was crazy. With the New Year came some new resolutions, and one is that I resolve to post here more, and to see more of you guys at my shows.

I’ll be candid for a moment. When writing this blog, I am faced with the decision of posting regularly (once a week), versus posting when I have a lot of information to send your way. A couple of my friends mentioned that they would like to learn more tricks to try on their friends, while some just want a quick summary of what’s going on in magic. I’ll try to cover the latter half now, and get a new video tutorial up soon. Deal?

Criss Angel is still making episodes of MindFreak which are going straight to the internet, I’d post a link but I’m not a fan of his. Google is your friend though!

Locally, there is a one a month “big show” at the Magic Garage, I’ll repost this link and mention it on Facebook as it gets a little closer.

There is some talk of opening a magic shop in San Jose. This matters because there used to be a great shop in Milpitas (not at the Great Mall). They sadly went out of business. There was a small kiosk at my local mall that closed. At AMC Saratoga, next to the theater there was a shop there for awhile, but that too closed. So now the only way to buy magic is either online, at Toys R Us, or drive to San Francisco. The possibility of a local shop again is pretty exciting.

There ya go, a catch up to magic locally. Next week, I’ll teach ya something new!

As a child I had a clown come to a birthday party, and this awesome magician come to my school. In cub scouts, my scout leader was a part time magician, and I think I’ve always gone out of my way to see live magic whenever possible.

That having been said, if you (looks through computer screen, yes YOU!) have ever seen live magic, where was it, and what was the setting? More importantly, were they any good, and would you see them again if you had the chance?
